Elder Coon always taught people the ABC's of prayer. Simply stated the ABC's are:
A - Ask. In Matthew 7:7-8. Jesus invites us to, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened."
B - Believe. "Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them." Mark 11:24.
C - Claim, or thank God. "And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “ Father, I thank You that You have heard Me." John 11:41.
The Bible is abundantly clear that it is the will of God to give us in answer to the prayer of faith that which we would not receive if we did not pray. Therefore, Jesus bids us to ask. How amazing it is that the vault of heaven with its endless resources is available to all those who come in faith and ask! I have met so many people who do not ask much from God. They seem to think it would weary God in some way. But nothing could further from the truth.
By faith we can grasp tightly to the promises of God's word, the Bible. Elder Coon suggested there were 3,573 promises or clusters of promises found throughout the Bible. Anyone with like circumstances and like faith as those in the Bible to whom the promises were given can expect the same results. So when we come to God in prayer with His promise firmly in our mind, we can expect that our prayer will be heard and that we shall receive that we have claimed through the promise or something better.
Then we are to thank God for the answer to our prayers even before we receive that for which we have prayed. "True faith lays hold of and claims the promised blessing before it is realized and felt. We must send up our petitions in faith within the second veil and let our faith take hold of the promised blessing and claim it as ours. We are then to believe that we receive the blessing, because our faith has hold of it, and according to the Word it is ours. “What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” Mark 11:24. Here is faith, naked faith, to believe that we receive the blessing, even before we realize it." Ellen White, Early Writings, pg. 72.

Dear Father in heaven, please enable us to become faithful and effective in prayer. Show us how to order our day so that we can have more time for prayer. Give us the inspiration and power of the Holy Spirit so that our prayers may make a difference in the world for You today. Forgive our prayerlessness, and restore us to our first love. We pray this in Jesus' name, Amen.
